What is the difference between NHS and private dentures?

Primarily it’s the quality of the materials and the time and expertise spent creating bespoke cosmetic dentures. For information about our private dentures take a look at Our Range below.

Do my dentures need to be replaced?

Over time, dentures will need to be relined, or remade due to normal wear and natural age-related changes to the bones and soft tissues of your face and gums, or if the dentures become loose. To reline a denture, our clinical technician takes a new impression to reline the base. Generally, it is advised that you look to replace dentures that you've had for between 5 to 7 years.

Can dentures be adjusted?

After you get your dentures, it is normal to need one or more follow-up appointments to get adjustments. Please don't attempt to adjust your dentures yourself. Never bend the clasps or framework yourself as this will weaken the structure.

How to clean my dentures?

Like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to remove food and plaque. Clean your dentures with a denture cleaner. Rinse your dentures, place in a container or glass and soak for no more than 4 minutes or as directed on the products instructions. Using only a soft brush (to avoid scratching the surface of your dentures) brush and rinse your dentures in clean water afterward. Leave to soak in clean water overnight.

Do not use boiling water as it may distort your dentures. Do not soak in cleaning solution overnight.

Don't forget to clean any remaining teeth, your gums and tongue with a soft brush each night as well. This removes plaque and boosts circulation in the mouth. Clean, rest, and massage your gums regularly.

Can my dentures be repaired?

Mishaps do occur. If dentures are dropped on a hard surface or up against a sharp point of contact they will likely come off the looser. We do not recommend using over the counter 'do it yourself' repair kits or Superglue. 'Do it yourself' repair kits can permanently damage dentures, and over-the-counter glues may contain harmful chemicals. Superglue doesn’t bond well with the dentures, which are made from acrylic and metal. Trying to superglue your dentures back together could cause damage to or misalignment of the dentures themselves as it melts the acrylic.

How to choose my dentures

This is a very individual choice and will vary from person to person. What base you choose, the type of teeth and the set up that you prefer will all alter the end result. If you are happily accustomed to wearing acrylic dentures, then stay with what you are happy with. Our high impact acrylic bases are comfortable, natural looking and can better withstand the occasional, gentle knock. No denture takes kindly to being dropped so do handle with care.

If you find you are losing too much in the food taste department or have a strong gag reflex, you may wish to choose a chrome base. Chromes tend to have a thinner base with less coverage of the palate.

You may want your dentures to look like your natural teeth used to. Our registered dental technicians can set up your dentures based on a photograph of you. Just bring a clear head shot in for them to work from.

Our Range of Private Dentures

Private dentures give you more freedom and choice with your dentures. This does not just apply to the range of treatments available e.g. flexible dentures, chrome or different types of acrylic partial dentures etc. but to the actual dentures themselves.

Your new dentures are created after Andrew, our clinical dental technician, has completed the design and planning of your new dentures with you. This requires a number of appointments for initial and master impressions and bite registrations as well as understanding what you need and how you’d like them.

Working with Ross, our highly skilled senior dental technician, they will hope to create a natural looking denture that is durable and functional. Together they will put far more time and experience into the construction of your dentures for a bespoke result. You can then be confident in your appearance and smile while getting on with your life without discomfort or worry.

The materials used cost more, placing the emphasis on an aesthetically pleasing denture. The pink acrylic used will be more naturally shaded to be less noticeable in your mouth and it will be harder, meaning it will last longer.

The teeth used also look more realistic and are of a more durable material, which is less susceptible to staining and everyday wear.

Because your money pays for more time spent on making the dentures, you may also be able to incorporate any customisation that makes your dentures either more comfortable (sculpting around the gum area) or more realistic (making some teeth twisted slightly or having some space between the teeth as you did naturally).
